Rhodes is the largest island in the Greek Dodecanese, home to more than 100,000 people and the capital of the archipelago. Helios, the Greek god of the sun, was chosen by its people to reign over the island and is definitely the right place to worship him. There is an Acropolis here (yes, another one), high on a hill overlooking the modern city of Rhodes, as is the ancient burial site of Rodini. The New Town, and much of the island, is more famous for its nocturnal attractions, however: a cosmopolitan nightlife thrives after dark in the form of numerous nightclubs, bars and discos. Explore the Old Town - the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe - and you'll get lost in a maze of winding lanes where ruins appear around every corner. Add the shopping, delectable restaurants and trips through the historic town of Lindos, and Rhodes offers as much variation as there are islands speckled through the Aegean.
